Kindle Rises to #2 On Amazon Bestsellers List

Amazon's own Kindle has actually been rising in the past week on Amazon's "Bestsellers in Electronics" list, and is now #2 ON THE LIST -- just after Apple's silver 4GB iPod nano. The reason this is surprising is that Kindle cannot be received in time for Christmas -- a fact Amazon is very clear about -- while all other products on the list can. Its position does not mean Kindle is actually beating out other gadgets in overall sales. Because most or all other devices on the top-25 list are available from many other online and retail stores -- and Kindle is available only at the Amazon site -- it's not an apples-to-apples comparison, so to speak. Kindle's actual sales remains a tightly held secret.

Just received my Kindle a couple of days ago (a Christams presnet to myself), and I love it. On a lark I asked the Kindle NowNow service how many Kindles have been sold. Their answer was a guess of around 4,000 to 5,000 based on the number of questions their service receives. They acknowledge that this is probably a low estimate since many of the Kindles are probably still wrapped up as gifts.
The only thing I truly dislike about the Kindle is the cover that does not stay on. I hope this gets popular enough such that there are some 3rd parties that come out with accessories for it.

It does seem like a low estimate (4,000 to 5,000), but it is good to see an estimate of any kind. I am involved with the Kindle on the writing and publishing side and it is fascinating to try to extrapolate some sense of how many Kindles are in circulation and what the monthly production and shipping velocity might be over the course of the next couple of years. Seldom is a new market for publishers so tightly defined by hardware acquisition growth.

I have had my cover fall off only once. I have noted reviewers saying the cover readily falls off. Are you sure you pushed the cover on until you heard or felt a "click" as the little tab drops into the notch? I had planned to add a velcro tab, but find I really don't need it as long as I put the cover on when the Kindle is asleep so that I can push without losing my place in the book.

I think I figured out the cover. It appears that the edge of the plastic clip needs to be pointing to the right (it came pointing to the left). In any case, when I flipped it to the right it seems to hold the Kindle in place. Still don't hear a click into place though.
